Sires
Produce on Doubtfilly's agenda
Glenn Davis
Saturday 4 February 2012
Doubtfilly
($2 fav) finished powerfully to haul in early leader Optionality
($4.60) for a half neck win in the Skyracing.TV Handicap (1110m).
Wonderful
Jester ($5.50) finished third a half neck away.
Mackay
trainer Stu Kendrick plans to rest the daughter of Not A Single
Doubt immediately before making a decision whether to aim her
for the Group Two Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm
during the Brisbane winter carnival.
Kendrick
left Doomben with a good impression after Doubtfilly finished
her race off strongly.
"She's
a tough filly and it was a good gutsy win," Kendrick said.
"She
got a little worked up before the race in the humid conditions
which makes the win even better.
"She's
done a good job so far but she'll have a break now before I'll
have to make a decision about coming back for the winter or
stay home for more QTIS races."
Doubtfilly's
win took her record to three wins from five starts.
Jockey
Jim Byrne was reluctant to declare whether he rated Doubtfilly
up to winter carnival class.
"It
was a good effort but she's only small and she didn't beat much,"
Byrne said.
Byrne
said he was not concerned when Doubtfilly was caught three off
the fence in the middle stages.
"I
was never worried as we had plenty of cover," Byrne said.
Kendrick
feels Doubtfilly, who scored a commanding win at Eagle Farm
at her previous start, still has plenty of maturing to do.
"She's
one of those two-year-olds who's had natural ability from day
one," he said.
"I've
had to work a fair bit on her manners. She's not a big filly
and she's still got a lot of maturing to do."
Kendrick,
who trained at Eagle Farm for 10 years before relocating to
Mackay in 2004, had some reservations how Doubtfilly would cope
for the first time on a rain-affected track.
But
after being rated heavy early in the week, Doomben dried out
sufficiently to be dead.
Kendrick
is likely to set Doubtfilly for QTIS races in Rockhampton and
Mackay if he decides against taking the giant step up in class
to the winter carnival.
Apprehend
Captures Werribee Cup
Breednet - Media Release -
Monday, 30 January 2012
Free-wheeling
stayer Apprehend sent his winnings soaring past $500,000 with
a three length victory in the Living Legends Werribee Cup(2600m)
on Sunday.
Apprehend
is prepared by Aquanita trainer Tony Vasil and he will be set
for the Hobart and Launceston Cups next month.
A
son of former Swettenham Stud sire Hold That Tiger (USA) (pictured),
Apprehend was purchased by the late Harry Lawton for $45,000
at the 2007 Inglis Premier yearling sale. His dam Regal Touch
scored in Sydney and also won Wagga and Canberra Cups.
Apprehend
(6g Hold That Tiger - Regal Touch by Touching Wood) was set
alight past the half-mile and had established an unbeaten lead
at the top of the Werribee straight. "He was never going
to lose,” in-form jockey Craig Newitt declared. "He
pricked his ears and relaxed. I let him roll along and then
took off at the 600m.”
Hold
That Tiger (Storm Cat) reverse shuttled from Swettenham to France
for three years before Haras de la Haie Neuve bought him to
stand permanently at its base between Le Mans and Rennes.
His
penultimate Swettenham bred yearlings includes a filly catalogued
for the Adelaide Magic Millions as Lot 304. Consigned by Keyneton
based Riva Ridge Stud, she is from the Danehill Dancer mare
Winning Team.
The
pedigree received an update when her older half-brother It Is
Written won a Werribee maiden by three lengths on January 15.
The Written Tycoon colt is trained by Robbie Griffiths and he
was a $45,000 buy from Riva Ridge at the 2010 Adelaide Magic
Millions.
Apprehend
completed a winning double for Hold That Tiger at Werribee.
Earlier in the day, his filly Temper Tantrum won her second
race in a row over 1600m. She is a homebred for the Henwood
family and is trained by Alicia Macpherson.
Hold
That Tiger has sired 318 individual winners world-wide at better
than a 60% strike-rate. Topping his stakes winning roll-call
is G1 winning USA sprinter Smiling Tiger.
Apprehend
is a half brother to Darby Racing's Regal Choice who finished
2nd at Wyong on Thursday in the 1600m maiden. Further distance
also looks like it will suit the son of Choisir!
Caviar
strolls in for win 17
Brad Waters

Trainer
Peter Moody raised a bigger sweat watching Black Caviar than
the champion did in the process of recording her 17th straight
win in Friday night's Group II Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee
Valley. A hot Melbourne night caused Moody and many of the massive
crowd at Moonee Valley to break into a sweat while Black Caviar
remained cool and professional at her first run since the Group
I Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) at Flemington in November last
year. The $200,000 race was over as a contest once the super
daughter of Bel Esprit left the gates cleanly to park behind
her the early pacesetter Zedi Knight. Luke Nolen remained still
in the saddle until he subtly slipped Black Caviar more rein
with 450 metres to travel to bury her opposition. The jockey
allowed Black Caviar to soak up the rapturous applause in the
straight before the five-year-old posted a 4-1/4-length in the
smart time of 1.09.44.
"It was great to see her back,” Moody said. "Her
attitude was good, her action was terrific so hopefully it is
the start of a wonderful six months.
"They
race 1.9-something. It was easy to say she was unextended but
how much faster do they go. It was wonderful to see her back
in great shape.”
Moody said Black Caviar's immediate program would remain unchanged
with the super mare to tackle 1400 metres in the Group I double
of the C F Orr and Futurity Stakes at Caulfield next month.
However, the trainer said a meeting with Black Caviar's owners
on Friday week would lock in her travelling campaign, which
could take in Dubai as well as the UK later in the year.
"We'll
use the old adage of (AFL coach) Kevin Sheedy, to take it one
game at a time,” Moody said. "There's a race for
her every Saturday on the eastern seaboard of Australia and
other parts of the world for next six months.”
Black Caviar's stablemate Doubtful Jack grabbed third ahead
of Rock Classic, who turned in an excellent run at his first
start for more than a year
Darby
Racing to the fore at Wyong! Snitsky Impressive!
Scott Darby
Thursday
January 26, 2012
Darby Racing enjoyed a day out at the
races with a win a second and a third from 3 runners at Wyong
this afternoon!
Clearly the most impressive horse of the day was the Gerald
Ryan trained, Darby Racing syndicated 'Snitsky', a 3YO bay colt,
this strapping son of Snitzel was all class winning the 1200m
maiden on the heavy track in a sizzling 1:10.04! This classy
colt has always shown Gerald Ryan plenty on the training track
and with the addition of blinkers he gave his opponents a galloping
lesson. More wins in store for this son of Snitzel!
Darby
Racing had 2 runners in the first race in the 1600m maiden with
Choisir gelding 'Regal Choice' finishing a close up 2nd and
'Rock This World' coming from last to finish 3rd. Both horses
are looking for longer and will be winning shortly!
Caviar
among Newmarket entries
Brad Waters
Tuesday, 24 January 2012
Melbourne's premier trainer Peter Moody has pulled a surprise
by nominating champion mare Black Caviar for the Group I Newmarket
Handicap (1200m) at Flemington.
Black
Caviar won the 2011 Newmarket Handicap in emphatic fashion,
posting a time of 1.07.36 despite carrying a hefty 58.5kg impost
against the males.
The
super daughter of Bel Esprit recorded a handicapper's rating
of 126 for her success, which jumped to 130 after the mare won
the Group I Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) in November last year.
Black
Caviar's performances since her win in last year's Newmarket
Handicap would ensure the five-year-old carried a minimum of
60kg in the 2012 edition of the feature sprint.
Black
Caviar is one of 72 entries for the $1 million sprint, which
is two fewer than the 2011 number but nine more nominations
than in 2010.
The
nominations for the famous Flemington event contain 15 individual
Group I winners, including Emirates Stakes winner Albert The
Fat and All Aged Stakes victor Hay List.
The
Moody stable has entered 11 runners in the Newmarket Handicap.
Meanwhile,
the 2010 Melbourne Cup winner Americain heads the 53-strong
nominations for the Group I Darley Australian Cup (2000m).
Americain
will race for the David Hayes stable for the first time during
the autumn after top French trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre prepared
the son of Dynaformer for his Melbourne Cup win.
Flemington
will host both races on March 10.
Punters
back Black Caviar to equal record
Nic Ashman - Racenet
Tuesday, 24 January 2012
Punters have thrown their support behind Black Caviar to equal
Silent Witness’s record of 17-straight wins.
Black
Caviar remains undefeated after 16 starts and will resume in
Friday night’s Group II Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee
Valley.
Centrebet
has been offering a market for Black Caviar to equal the consecutive
winning records of Silent Witness (17) and champion US mare
Zenyatta (19).
The
Australian-bred Silent Witness won his first 17 starts over
sprint journey's. The son of El Moxie had his first taste of
defeat when tested over 1600 metres in the 2005 Group I Champions
Mile.
"The
smart punters jumped into the $1.08 on offer last weekend about
Black Caviar equaling Silent Witness’s record,”
Centrebet’s Neil Evans said.
"She’s
into $1.05 now and you’d have to think after seeing the
limited entries for Friday’s race that you’d be
lucky to get much more than that on the day."
Black
Caviar has firmed from $1.30 into $1.20 with the betting giant
to break Zenyatta’s record.
Who
Bought what at Inglis Classic Sale!
Tara Madgwick - Breednet
Tuesday January 24, 2012
Domestic
buyers dominated at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale with a
particular resurgence noted from the strong West Australian
contingent in attendance.
Leading
buyer at the sale was Aquanita Racing, who purchase horses for
accomplished Victorian trainers Robert Smerdon, Tony Vasil and
WA based Simon Miller. They signed for 11 youngsters totalling
$515,000, their most expensive acquisition a Snitzel colt (pictured)
from Banishing that made $100,000.
Sydney
based syndicators Darby Bloodstock and Star Thoroughbreds were
next on the list, while pinhooking outfit BC3 Thoroughbreds
was also active.
WA
based buyers purchased 25 yearlings for $1,028,500, that figure
up sharply on last year when they bought just 12 for $371,500,
so vendors were glad to see those ‘sandgropers'!
2
Colts of the Future Purchased today at the Inglis Classic Sale!
Scott Darby
Monday January 23, 2012
Darby Racing in conjunction with 4 time
Golden Slipper Winner Clarry Conners have purchased what I think
could very well be the buy of the CENTURY!
Clarry
Conners approached me asking my thoughts on Lot 213 Snitzel
out of Zest as he had marked it the highest colt in sale a 9/10.
I also had him marked in the top 5 and joined forces with one
of Clarry’s clients to try and purchase this very good
colt between us. We secured him under our evaluation!
He is by the sire on fire SNITZEL, this impeccable colt is out
of the Marauding mare Zest who is a ¾ sister to CLOISTER
who is the dam of MELITO. In the immediate family is Magic Millions
winner MILITARY ROSE, highly successful stallion ZEDITAVE and
ALANON. As Clarry pointed out today we would only need to win
a decent race with this colt to secure his future at stud. He
is also bred on exactly the same cross as recent star AMORINO
(Snitzel over a Marauding mare).
Darby
Racing's 2nd purchase was a stunning colt by new stallion Shinzig
who has the perfect record of one runner for one winner! Out
of the Stakes placed Marscay mare Dreaming On. This colt was
Gerald Ryan's picks of the sale as you can see why from his
photo below. An outstanding colt that looks like he will get
up and run early!
Cordelia
to fore at Rosehill tomorrow!
Scott Darby
Friday October 28, 2011
Darby
Racing's Snitzel 2YO Cordelia may not be the biggest filly in
training but let me tell you she is all heart and has plenty
of fire and her own share of ability. Tomorrow at Rosehill she
tackles her 2nd race start after finishing 7th on debut fromt
he wide barrier, trapped 3-4 deep, pulling and coming 8 wide
around the turn she still managed to run home into midfield
form last. She has improved since her first start, drawn barrier
3 tomorrow and the addition of pacifiers should help to contain
the fire within. We are expecting her to go close to winning
at just her 2nd start.
Very
best of luck to all the owners!
Chris
Lawrence from the West's Tigers steals the show!
Scott Darby
Monday September 12, 2011
A massive crowd turned out yesterday
for another fantastic Darby Racing Open Day to view the 14 horses
on parade meet the Darby Racing trainers and enjoy a sausage
sizzle and refreshments. The day was huge hit but certainly
the highlight for most of the owners in attendance was the appearance
of up and coming superstar NRL player Chris Lawrence from the
West's Tigers!
Chris Lawrence and Benji Marshall are part owners in the Darby
Racing partnership by Charge Forward named Star Charged trained
by Marc Conner's. Unfortunately Benji could not make it but
Chris Lawrence was in attendance and pretty much stole the show
with owners lining up to meet Chris and ask for an autograph.
The day was most enjoyable with great weather! A huge thank
you to all who attended and especially those who slaved away
in the background to make the day a success! Go to the front
page to view the photos of the day!
