Lonhro-
Octagonal / Shadea

|
Lonhro
Brown 1998 16.1hh
Octagonal / Shadea
A
handy two year-old Lonhro won twice as a juvenile including
the Group 3 MRC Blue Diamond Prelude.
In
his classic year he was unbeaten in seven starts and
he made it eight straight when successful first up at
four, a year in which he later had a sequence of five
victories.
As
a three year-old, Lonhro, although unbeaten, was not
as good as his sire but he was an exciting prospect,
especially in the spring when he claimed the Group 2
AJC Warwick Stakes (1300m), in race record time; Group
3 AJC Ming Dynasty Stakes (1400m); STC Listed Heritage
Stakes (1200m); AJC Stan Fox Stakes (1400m); and the
Group I MRC Caulfield Guineas (1600m). He had been favourite
each time.
Lonhro’s
best campaigns were during his four and five year-old
seasons in which he stirred racegoers with 17 wins that
featured 10 at Group I level in 23 starts.
His
success at four were the Group 3 STC Missile Stakes
(1100m); Group 2 NSW Tattersall’s Chelmsford Stakes
(1600m); Group I MRC Yalumba Stakes (2000m); VRC Mackinnon
Stakes (2000m); Group 2 AJC Expressway Stakes (1200m);
Apollo Stakes (1400m); Group I Chipping Norton Stakes
(1600m); STC George Ryder Stakes (1500m) and the Group
I AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).
|
As
a five year-old Lonhro finished his career with wins in
the Group 2 AJC Warwick Stakes (1400m); Group I Sydney
Tattersall’s Chelmsford Stakes (1600m); George Main
Stakes (1600m); MRC Yalumba Stakes (2000m); C F Orr Stakes
(1400m); Group 2 St George Stakes (1800m); Group I VRC
Australian Cup (2000m); and STC George Ryder Stakes (1500m)
in race record time.
At
the conclusion of the season Lonhro polled 153 of the
162 votes, when he was named Horse of the Year. He was
also voted Middle Distance Champion.
At
the end of Lonhro’s career the astute veteran racing
journalist, Bill Whittaker, showed his admiration for
Lonhro in an article in the Sydney Morning Herald:
“The
difference between a good horse and a great one can be
summed up in one word, acceleration, and Lonhro has it
Ferrari style.
“He
is the supreme weight-for-age horse, able to carry a heft
weight, travel at slow speed without pulling then sprint
very fast without being whipped.
“He
is an honest, generous, no nonsense, thoroughly sound
racehorse maintaining top form for four seasons,”
Whittaker wrote.

Second
living foal of
Body
& Soul
(Marscay / Aretha)
Body
and Soul
is by the outstanding broodmare sire Marscay and was
lightly raced. She is a half sister to stakes winner
Sir Linford and stakes
placed Soul Queen and Our
Axeman. Body and Soul
is out of the stakes winning Sir Dapper mare and grand
producer Aretha, who is
in turn out of a stakes placed mare herself Soul
Power.

Lonhro / Body & Soul |
Aretha
by Sir Dapper, was a winner at 2
and also won the Listed MVRC Crown Larger Stakes. She
is out of the stakes placed mare Soul
Power and is a half sister to the stakes performed
gallopers Power Symbol, The
American and Nun's Chorus.
However it is in the breeding barn that Aretha
has excelled producing Sir Linford
- 11 time winner including the QTC Sunstate Airlines Stakes.
Soul Queen - 2nd in the Group3
Tatts Furious Stakes.
Our Axeman - 7 time winner
including a stakes placing.
Body and Soul was only lightly
raced and from her 1st foal to race has produced a winner,
Boendso by End Sweep, winner
of 3 races in the season 2006-07.
This
is an extremely well put together athletic filly from
a family that is no stranger to winning and winning in
stakes races. Lonhro has stamped his progeny and I think
this filly is no exception, She is Quality
and Class.

This
outstanding filly will be trained by one of Australia's
leading trainers Clarry Conners.
Clarry
Conners is not your typical horse trainer. He has been
around the thoroughbred all his life, enjoying one of
most colourful upbringings in racing alongside his father,
Clarry senior.
The two Clarrys traveled NSW from racing centre to racing
centre, which for the teenager Clarry junior, was a wonderful
education for when he did finally branch solo.
And as a stand-alone trainer, Clarry made an instant impression
on the fickle industry and always had a stand-out horse
in the stable.
|
Of
course, Victory Lodge, named after Clarry's complex, was
his first taste of Group 1 success, winning the 1984 AJC
Sires Produce Stakes - beating the great Red Anchor.
A
host of the elite Group races have followed, including
the training of two Racehorse of the Year- the champion
filly Research and the champion two-year-old Tierce, Ironically,
sired by Victory Prince.
Research
did the impossible - beating the colts in the 1989 AJC
Derby then backing up four days later to win the AJC Oaks.
Tierce
and Burst won Sydney racing's two-year-old grand slam
- 1989 STC Golden Slipper Stakes then the AJC double of
the Sires Produce and Champagne Stakes in successive years,
an amazing training feat.
Not
to mention Clarry's four Golden Slipper successes - Burst,
Tierce, Prowl and Belle de Jour.
So
Clarry's record says it all, but where he differs from
most Sydney stables, is that a racing a horse with Clarry
is an experience with a difference.
Clarry's
wife Maree is the stable manager and alongside her husband
every day to ensure the communication to owners is second-to-nine.
And
you need not worry about your horse's welfare. Clarry
and Maree live on site so your horse has the trainer's
attention 24/7.
No
wonder Victory Lodge is such a successful establishment.
